Overseas Employment

With the internalization of economies, overseas employment has seen an upward surge.  Unlike before, when the jobs offered abroad are mostly domestic and factory-related works, career opportunities available in the existing global employment market range from professional to skill-based works, including nursing, care giving, and IT professions.

The welfare of overseas workers has also been given good attention. As countries begin to recognize the workers’ value to the economy, international economic agreements governing overseas employment and workers’ rights and safety were drafted.

Meanwhile, as the world faces the credit and oil crises, employment growth is anticipated to decline, according to ILO. The Organization’s January 2008 Global Employment Trend (GET) report also noted that five out of ten people in the world are in vulnerable employment and that 550 million workers are living on less than$1 a day.

These employment challenges were addressed in United Nation’s (UN) Millennium Development Goals that aims to end the employment disparity brought by globalization, create jobs for developing nations, promote gender equality, and develop a global partnership for development.
